The Department of Automotive Engineering was established since 2003, and currently operates with a total of 29 staffs including academics staffs and technicians. Up to date, there are fifteen active academic staffs supported by four laboratory technicians in our department, while the remaining staffs are on study leave pursuing doctoral/master programmes and one is on unpaid leave. Amongst the active staffs are four PhD holders and eleven Master’s holder.

The Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Automotive) with Honours programme provide students with excellent focus in automotive engineering knowledge and experience, ranging from vehicle dynamics and control, vehicle powertrain and emission control, vehicle structure integrity and crashworthiness as well as vehicle vibration, noise and harshness. We are proud to announce that the Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Automotive) with Honours programme is a well recognized engineering programme and more recently has gain continuous success of accreditation by the Malaysian Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) as well as by the Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA).

In ensuring the highest quality standard is made available for our students, the Department of Automotive Engineering is equipped with modern laboratory facilities for both teaching and learning as well as research purposes such as engine dynamometer, chassis dynamometer, industrial standard CAD and CAE software (CATIA V5, MSC ADAMS, CES Material Engineering Selection, Autodesk Alias, Matlab), automotive maintenance equipments (wheel alignment, wheel balancing, tyre changer, 2-post and 4-post lifts), quarter model vehicle, NGV system training equipment etc. These modern automotive engineering facilities are located in seven specialized automotive engineering laboratories such as Engine Performance Testing Laboratory, Automotive Design Laboratory, Automotive Noise & Vibration Laboratory, Automotive Chassis and Structural Laboratory, Automotive Autotronic Laboratory, Automotive Service & Maintenance Laboratory and Basic Automotive Laboratory.

A part from teaching and learning, our department is also actively engaged in numerous research and development activities, through active participations by departmental academic staffs, postgraduate and undergraduate students in various research projects such as UTeM Short Term Grant project and Fundamental Research Grant Scheme project. To further align the research activities with the faculty research thrust areas which are Automotive Engineering and Energy, the department has established four research clusters to support the goal which are the Vehicle Dynamics, Control & Electrical System, Vehicle Powertrain System & Emission Control, Vehicle Structure, Safety & Impact, and Vehicle Noise, Vibration & Harshness (NVH).
